A wonderful historic presentation of needlework.
This is an enormous book of over 600 pages. It is outrageous in thoroughness and is quite enthralling to me. I love to study about needlework, about history and about the history of needlework. I have almost 1,000 needlework books and lately have taken to collecting antique and vintage books. I don't have a kindle and can't imagine that many of the books I love would work well on it.
The history of this book is caught up in the history of the Royal School of Needlework and, actually, in an earlier publication Lady Alford edited the 1880 Handbook Of Embroidery written by L. (Letitia) Higgin. You may know that the School of Art-Needlework was
"founded in 1872, under the Presidency of H.R.H. the Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holsterin, the twofold purpose of supplying suitable employment for Gentlewomen and restoring Ornamental Needlework to the high place it once held among the decorative arts. It was first established, under the title of School of Art-Needlework, in Sloane Street; but in 1875, was removed to the present premises in the Exhibition Road, and Her Majesty the Queen was graciously pleased to grant to it the prefix of "Royal." . . . The result of seven years' experiences of the working of the School has shown that the objects for which it was formed are appreciated by the public...."

Lady Alford worked very closely with Letitia Higgin and was so inspired by the 1880 book that she threw herself into researching the history of needlework and in 1886, only six years later, she authored this reviewed book. She states in the Preface that this huge tome is the "second part" to the 1880 book which is only a fraction of it in size! Her exploration of needlework took her to the far ends of the earth and hearkened back to ancient times. She gives broad comprehensive overviews on various cultures' designs and uses of embroidery and then gives really outstanding analysis. She has ferreted out so many literary references to needlework and displays hundreds and hundreds of illustrations. I'm stunned that I haven't heard more about this book. Perhaps this review will inspire you to look into it.
